Tuscany Medieval Festival: A Journey Back in Time in Livorno

From May 9 to 11, 2025, the city of Livorno will host one of the most anticipated historical events of the Tuscan spring: the Tuscany Medieval Festival. This isn’t just a re-enactment, but a true immersion into the medieval world, with live performances, historical encampments, medieval markets, workshops, and ancient music.

The heart of the festival will be the Fortezza Nuova, one of the city’s symbolic landmarks, which will transform into a vibrant medieval castle, inhabited by knights, artisans, merchants, and jesters. This event is designed to engage both families and tourists in search of unique experiences.

Tuscany Medieval Festival

Dates: May 9, 10, and 11, 2025

The Tuscany Medieval Festival 2025 will take place from Friday, May 9 to Sunday, May 11. Three full days of non-stop events, with a packed schedule running from morning till late evening. The event is organized by the City of Livorno in collaboration with Italian and European historical reenactment groups.

The Location: Fortezza Nuova, Historic and Symbolic Heart of Livorno

Located in the center of Livorno, the Fortezza Nuova is a XVI-century architectural jewel. Surrounded by navigable canals and set in a green park, it is the perfect location for creating an authentic medieval atmosphere.

During the festival, every corner of the fortress will come to life: the walls will host tournaments and duels, the courtyards will turn into medieval markets, and the halls will welcome concerts and exhibitions.

The Program of Tuscany Medieval Festival 2025: What to See and Do

1. Pyromusical Shows

Each evening of the festival will conclude with spectacular pyromusical performances: fireworks synchronized with medieval and cinematic music. The combination of lights, sounds, and the historic setting of the fortress will make each night magical.

2. Tournaments and Sword Duels

One of the most exciting moments will be the medieval tournaments. Visitors can watch real fights staged by historical reenactors, with armor, swords, and realistic settings. Fighters will compete in tests of strength, skill, and strategy, just like in medieval tournaments.

3. Medieval Markets and Artisan Stalls

Strolling through the historical market, visitors will be able to breathe in the atmosphere of an authentic medieval village. There, they will find handmade products, fabrics, tools, ceramics, jewelry, medicinal herbs, and spices. Artisans will work live, offering demonstrations of ancient trades such as leatherworking, blacksmithing, and weaving.

4. Medieval Music and Themed Concerts

Music will play a central role with live performances from groups specializing in medieval music. A must-see will be the orchestral concert inspired by the world of Tolkien, taking place on Sunday, May 11, with the Goldoni Theater Orchestra performing “The Lord of the Rings” film scores in a medieval style.

5. Historical Parade

The opening parade will feature over 300 participants in period costumes, with heralds, ladies, knights, soldiers, and musicians. A true itinerant spectacle that will pass through the historic center of Livorno, accompanied by drums and trumpets.

6. Workshops and Activities for Children

For the younger visitors, there will be engaging and educational activities: writing with ink and quill, medieval calligraphy workshops, archery, wooden toy making, and heraldic shield creation. Educators in costume will guide children through hands-on historical experiences tailored just for them.

7. Street Food and Historical Cuisine

During the festival, there will be food areas offering dishes inspired by medieval tradition: soups, focaccia, grilled meat, aged cheeses, craft beer, and period sweets. All in a lively setting with wooden tables and live music.
