Origins of the Naval Academy

Before being centralized in Livorno, naval training in Italy was split between Genoa and Naples. The establishment of a unified Naval Academy marked a turning point toward a modern, centralized training model. Since 1881, Livorno has been the official home of the academy—thanks to its strategic coastal location and deep maritime heritage.

Tradition Meets Innovation

The Naval Academy is known for balancing strict military discipline with high-level academic education. In addition to leadership and physical training, cadets follow university-level courses in engineering, nautical sciences, law, and other essential disciplines for Navy operations.

Over time, the academy has embraced new technologies and teaching methods while maintaining its historical identity. Onboard training, physical activities, and academic classes prepare cadets to become adaptable, well-rounded officers ready for international missions.

Courses and Entry Requirements for the Naval Academy

Admission to the Naval Academy is open to young Italian citizens with a high school diploma, typically aged between 17 and 22. Each year, a public call for applications is published, including written exams, aptitude tests, medical checks, and interviews. Those who pass begin a multi-year training program tailored to their chosen specialization.

Popular admission paths include:

  • Fixed-Term Officer Cadet Program (AUFP): Open to applicants up to 38 years old. Candidates must pass a cultural exam and physical efficiency test, in addition to meeting mental and physical fitness standards.
  • Regular Officer Cadet Program: Designed for recent high school graduates under 22. Entry exams include questions on physics, biology, chemistry, English language skills, and physical performance.
  • Permanent Service Officers – Normal Role: Civilian applicants may compete alongside military personnel for entry into this track.
  • Permanent Service Midshipman – Special Role: Requires a high school diploma and a specialized or master’s degree aligned with the required field.

In addition to technical and theoretical instruction, the academy strongly emphasizes personal growth, a sense of duty, and teamwork.
